Ánimo South Los Angeles Charter High School (ASLA) serves the educational needs of students living in the South Los Angeles community of Southern California. The residents of South Los Angeles are primarily of African American and Latino heritage. The median household income is below the California state average while the unemployment rate is above the state average. Students who attend ASLA would have attended one of two large public high schools in the area where dropout rates average over 50% for African American and Latino students. The academic program at ASLA is organized on a block schedule where classes meet every other day for 95 minutes, and one day in which all classes meet for 55 minutes. ASLA provides a college-prep, rigorous, standards-aligned curriculum for all students. ASLA has aligned its graduation requirements with the UC/CSU “a-g” requirements. Students must earn a minimum of 245 credits to graduate.
During the past 8 years our top students have received admissions from all 23 California State University and all 9 University of California campuses.
Words from Our Community
"I like the culture and diversity of my school. Everybody has a place where they can just be themselves, and everyone is accepted."
"I like all my teachers. They've been treating me well. I feel I want to do go, and I want to be effective for a good college in order to start my career."
"This school, this staff, especially the principals and the support staff, they hear parents. We have a voice. When something occurs out of the ordinary, they respond immediately. "
"The thing about kids is you just have to give them the opportunity to make something right, and judge them for that restorative moment, not the moment when they were at their worst."
"I tell parents that you're not just sending your kid to a regular high school. You're sending them to a small, learning community that's allowing them to appreciate and develop into something that they're going to love when they become my age."
Ánimo is a Spanish word with great significance; it means: vigor, mind, spirit, valor, and the courage to overcome odds. The students at ASLA embody this meaning and much more. Ánimo South Los Angeles Charter High School was established in August, 2004 to prepare ethnically and economically diverse students for college, leadership and life.
Fueled by the high dropout rates within the surrounding area schools, ASLA started with a group of 140 9th graders and a staff of 7 teachers and 2 administrators who were committed to making a difference in the South Los Angeles community. Currently, ASLA has 3 Administrators, 2 Counselors, 1 Special Education Coordinator, 2 Resource Specialist, and 26 teachers. ASLA is part of Green Dot Public Schools, a nonprofit charter school management organization that is committed to opening quality, high performing middle & high schools in Los Angeles.
The underlying belief at ASLA is that all students deserve an education that will provide them with the knowledge, skills and tools necessary to be successful in college and life.
