We collectively share feelings of anger, frustration, and sadness. In the midst of the pandemic, several incidents have reminded us all that violence and racism continue to plague our country and undoubtedly weigh heavy on the hearts and minds of our Black scholars and families, as well as our Black colleagues. George Floyd was killed by a police officer who used a knee restraint on his neck for nearly eight minutes. Mr. Floyd’s words – “I can’t breathe” – take on profound meaning as we consider the smothering weight of injustice faced on a daily basis by our African American brothers and sisters. Ahmaud Arbery was chased and shot while jogging in a Georgia neighborhood. Breanna Taylor was an EMT providing health care who was killed during a police raid of her home in Kentucky. Christian Cooper was bird watching in Central Park when a woman used his race to make false claims in a 911 call. And just last week, Tony McDade, an African American transgender man was killed by Florida police.

On behalf of the 11,000+ scholars and families we serve, our organization recommits to meaningful reflection and action as we work to continue our mission of preparing students for college, leadership, and life. I have hope that our scholars will have a better future; that is why all educators show up to do what we do every day. But, as the quote from Augustine of Hippo reminds us, hope by itself is not enough. “Hope has two beautiful daughters; their names are anger and courage. Anger at the way things are, and courage to see that they do not remain as they are.”

Our organization commits to doing better and doing more together to fight for justice for those who have been historically silenced. We will continue to use our anger and courage to create a better tomorrow for those whom we have the privilege of serving and serving alongside.

As your students process the pain, outrage and calls for justice we have witnessed throughout the course of the last week, the Green Dot community will be there for them. We have prepared lessons and opportunities this week for our scholars to discuss their thoughts and feelings. Please do not hesitate to reach out to your school’s main phoneline or to the Green Dot main line at 323-565-1600 should you have questions, concerns or suggestions.

Thank you for your continued partnership. Stay safe and well and know that we are here for your family and your student.

With gratitude,

Dr. Cristina de Jesus

President and CEO
Green Dot Public Schools California

Dra.
