The mission of our athletic programs is to provide students with competitive opportunities in interscholastic sports so that they will learn and demonstrate the life-long values of leadership, sportsmanship, teamwork, and integrity.

Many summer programs are available for students to pursure addtional experience and learning. Some of the programs are free and many target minority students. Jobs & Internships
City Year, Washington, DC (AmeriCorps)
Graduating seniors who are not sure what they want to do after high school should consider applying for a paid community service position with City Year, Washington, DC, a group of 17-24 year olds committed to full-time service for ten months in the Washington, DC, community. Benefits include: living stipend, health care coverage, free metro pass, and an educational scholarship. Find out more
Constitutional Rights Foundation Youth Internship Program
The Youth Internship Program (YIP) places qualified urban students as paid interns in law firms, businesses, government offices, and non-profit organizations. Open to sophomores and juniors during their out-of-school months, the program is offered three times a year to accommodate students in Los Angeles’ year-round school systems. Each paid internship program lasts eight weeks. Students work at job sites for six out of the eight weeks. During the first and last week and every Friday of each program, YIP participants take part in educational seminars. Find out more
Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) National Internship Program
Since 1992, the HACU National Internship Program (HNIP) has recruited college students for paid summer- and semester-long internships at federal agencies and private corporations in Washington, D.C. and throughout the country. These ten and fifteen-week internship programs give college students direct experience in a diverse array of careers in the federal and corporate sectors. Find out more
INROADS
The mission of INROADS is to develop and place talented minority youth in business and industry and prepare them for corporate and community leadership. INROADS seeks high performing Black, Hispanic/Latino, and Native American Indian students for internship opportunities with some of the nation’s largest companies. Find out more
Leadership & Government
African American Youth Leadership Program (AAYLP)
The African American Youth Leadership Program is an annual conference for high school juniors and seniors in Sacramento, hosted by the Research and Policy Institute of California. Participants are exposed to training in leadership and personal development and are shown the tools of success in education, business, and government. Conference participants get hands-on experience that culminates in a mock presentation and debate of proposed bills in California’s Assembly Chambers. AAYLP graduates are admitted into the Society of Leaders, a virtual community connecting high-achieving students to academic support, career counseling, and to each other. Find out more
Boys State and Girls State
Boys State and Girls State are summer leadership programs, sponsored by the American Legion and the American Legion Auxillary. Students spend a week living on a college campus and learn about city, county, and state government. Students are eligible to participate the summer after their junior year. California Youth Think Tank (CYTT) Summer Residence Program
A youth leadership and diversity training program for California youth to explore important issues, bridge the gaps that divide them, and work collectively to find solutions to the challenges facing their communities and society. The program is designed to bolster students' leadership, communication, and critical thinking skills and has components for both high school and middle school students. Find out more
Chicano Latino Youth Leadership Project
This week-long leadership training conference hosted in Sacrament is open for all California high school students currently in the 10th and 11th grade. The conference provides valuable information on Chicano/Latino culture and history through personal experiences of presenters and their study of related topics. The leadership training is presented so that students can take what they learn back to their schools and communities. Find out more
Junior Statesmen of America Summer Program
Junior Statesmen of America allows students to immerse themselves in politics and government while making new friends and developing leadership skills. Find out more
Pre-College Leadership Program at Morehouse College
There are 2 programs, one for male students completing their sophomore or junior year, and the other for male students completing their senior year. The curriculum focuses on personal and interpersonal leadership skills. Find out more
Tavis Smiley Foundation "Youth to Leaders" Leadership Institute
The Tavis Smiley Foundation’s Leadership Institute is the core training and development program of Youth to Leaders. Each year students, ages 13-18, are invited to apply to attend this five-day conference held on a college campus. Between 200 and 250 students are accepted for participation along with adult allies who serve as chaperones. The majority of the Institute participants are moderate to low-income from urban and suburban communities nationwide. Each year 20-25 states are represented. Find out more

COSMOS – The California State Summer School for Mathematics & Science
The mission of COSMOS is to motivate the most creative minds of the new generation of prospective scientists, engineers, and mathematicians who will become leaders of California, the nation, and the world. The program aims to create a community of students who participate in and contribute to an intensive academic experience delivered by distinguished educators and scholars. Find out more
George Washington University Science & Engineering Apprenticeship program
This program places academically talented high school Students (at least 16 yrs old, sophomores/juniors) with interest in science & math in Department of Defense laboratories for an 8-week period over the summer. The program provides experience in the world of scientific research, with hands-on exposure to scientific & engineering practices not available in the HS environment. It is a paid apprenticeship and the students are assigned a scientist or engineer as their mentor. Find out more
National Space Club Scholars Program, sponsored by NASA
This is a 6 week summer internship at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. It is open to students who will be 16 years old and have completed the 10th grade, have demonstrated high academic success, and have an interest in space science or engineering as a career. Find out more
MITES Program (Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science) at MIT
MITES is a challenging 6 week summer program that prepares promising rising seniors for careers in engineering and science. If you are selected, all educational, housing, meals and activity costs are covered. You must, however, pay for your own transportation to and from MIT. Find out more
UCLA Engineering Science Corps Outreach Program
The UCLA Summer Research Program for high school students offers hands-on research experience working in an engineering laboratory of a distinguished UCLA faculty member. Each participant is matched with a faculty mentor and works as a member of that faculty mentor’s research group for eight summer weeks. Participants will attend weekly workshops/presentations conducted by faculty and staff during a catered lunch, which will expose participants to the various engineering departments at UCLA. High school participants also learn to translate their research data into the constructs of a scientific poster, which is presented on the final day of the program. Find out more
UCLA Center for Excellence in Engineering and Diversity "SMARTS" Program
Admitted students participate in CEED's Annual Science Mathematics Achievement and Research Technology for Students Program (SMARTS). SMARTS is a six-week summer college preparation program at UCLA designed to engage traditionally underrepresented students in rigorous science, technology, engineering and math instruction and training. Participants engage in math courses, SAT preparation, research, and college and career planning workshops. Students also complete six weeks of research in UCLA labs through the Research Assistance Program. The six-week experience is culminated with a closing ceremony where Research Apprentices formally present their projects to an audience of faculty, staff, parents and their peers. Find out more
Stanford University Mathematics Camp (SUMaC)
The SUMaC program brings mathematically talented and motivated high-school students from across the United States, and from around the world, to Stanford University for four weeks of serious mathematical pursuits. The goals of the program are to provide access for these students to advanced topics in mathematics, to lead these students through topics that are of great significance to mathemetics and the sciences, and to provide a friendly social environment for interaction between SUMaC participants and Stanford Mathematics Department faculty and students. Exploring Engineering at the University of Maryland (E2@UMD) is a one-week summer program for high school women (rising juniors or seniors) who are considering engineering as a possible major and career. You will live on campus for one-week and explore the world of engineering through fun hands-on activities, laboratory experiments, informative workshops, team challenges, and seminars with professional engineers.Find out more

The College Admission Prep Camp is a way to have a great time on a college campus this summer while getting a head start on the college admissions process. The program offers: SAT test preparations with a proven curriculum, college admissions essay one-on-one tutoring, college admissions guidance – where to apply, how the process works. Find out more
Hispanic College Fund Hispanic Youth Institute
The Hispanic Youth Institute is a national pre-college program that begins the Hispanic College Fund’s pipeline of programs helping students graduate from college, pursue professional careers and give back to the community. Students experience a university campus for a four-day, three-night college empowerment program where students will learn to overcome both real and perceived barriers to college access. The students participate in college and career workshops, connect with local Hispanic professionals, meet college admissions officers, interact with mentors, listen to inspirational speakers, and compete for scholarships. Throughout the on-campus experience, the students will build their confidence and receive practical tools to help them along their pathway to college. Find out more
Outward Bound, Los Angeles (OBA)
Serving the Greater Los Angeles area, OBA, Inc., better known as Outward Bound Adventures, is a nonprofit organization that provides meaningful nature-based educational experiences for urban underserved youth, young adults and their families. OBA uses the wilderness, urban communities and classroom settings to teach its middle school and high school participants about the natural world. Participants engage in activities and initiatives that promote self-empowerment, integrity, accountability, health, community service and environmental education. Find out more

Community College Opportunities
Students interested in making themselves more academically competitive may want to attend community college courses over the summer. Students who take advantage of concurrent enrollment opportunities demonstrate that they are capable of handling college level coursework. In addition, UC/CSU approved courses at the community college can help satisfy a high school subject requirement while simultaneously earning the student college credits.
