About Ánimo Phillis Wheatley
Ánimo Phillis Wheatley Charter Middle School #4 is a charter middle school located in Los Angeles, California. It serves students in the community of West Athens. Our charter was approved by the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) and the school currently has students enrolled from grades 6 through 8.
In 2011, Green Dot won control of the failing Henry Clay Middle School through LAUSD’s Public School Choice initiative, whereby operators can compete for the opportunity to run one of the city’s most persistently low-performing schools. Though PSC has since been closed to outside operators, Clay stands as evidence of its powerful potential. The school, listed as the lowest performing middle school in California, was split into two smaller, safer campuses: Ánimo Western Charter Middle School and Ánimo Phillis Wheatley Charter Middle School. The school was a Special Education hub under LAUSD and has the largest percentage of students with special educational needs of any Green Dot school.
